Revolutionizing Campus Tours: University Canada West’s Vancouver House Campus in 360 and VR
University Canada West (UCW), part of Global University Systems Canada (GUS), recently celebrated the grand opening of its new campus located in the iconic Vancouver House building, designed by the Bjarke Ingels Group and developed by Westbank Projects Corp. Perched in the heart of downtown Vancouver and surrounded by three elevated bridge onramps, this campus opened at a pivotal time as students transitioned back to in-person classes post-COVID. Keen to highlight both the dramatic architecture and the vibrant local scene for a predominantly international audience, UCW turned to 360Pros Virtual Media Inc to craft an immersive 360 and VR experience.
Capturing a Landmark Campus in 360°
From the start, UCW’s marketing and recruitment teams understood they needed more than a traditional campus tour. They required a digital platform that would let prospective students around the globe step onto the new campus virtually, exploring classrooms, social spaces, and the surrounding downtown core as if they were there in person. 360Pros responded by developing a fully interactive, high-resolution 360° virtual tour—complete with drone panoramas, video overlays, and an array of interactive hotspots. The result was an engaging web-based experience, supplemented by VR apps for Meta Quest and Google Cardboard, allowing viewers to “walk” through the campus using either standard browsers or virtual reality headsets.
Bringing the Vision to Life
Production began with a detailed UX and UI strategy to ensure smooth navigation for a global audience. The on-site capture process involved a specialized camera setup—including a Sony a7S iii paired with a Canon EF 8–15mm fisheye lens—mounted on a Nodal Ninja panohead to achieve bracketed exposures. This allowed for stunning 360° panoramic images across multiple lighting conditions. Afterwards, the team composited video hosts and background action into certain panoramas using Adobe After Effects, creating an authentic campus atmosphere. The final development took place in 3DVista Virtual Tour Pro, integrating branded menus, interactive elements, an intuitive floor plan, and user-guided audio cues.
Immersion and Engagement
Once launched, UCW’s virtual tour quickly attracted thousands of global viewers, with an average engagement time of nearly four minutes. Prospective students explored academic facilities, discovered the 80s-themed neon arcade room on campus, and admired the elevated downtown surroundings through drone-captured perspectives. By partnering with a local virtual tour provider, UCW was able to showcase the essence of life on campus, as well as downtown Vancouver’s cultural and professional opportunities—key factors for students considering relocation to Canada.
Technical Highlights
Each panoramic scene was bracketed at multiple exposures to balance interior and exterior lighting, then stitched and retouched in PTGui Pro, Adobe Lightroom, and Photoshop. Video overlays of a school spokesperson were recorded on-site and composited to appear within the 360° images, animating the tour with a personal touch. Simultaneously, a custom VR application was built for Meta Quest, iOS, and Android, ensuring seamless functionality across a range of platforms. All hosting and analytics are handled by 360Pros’s dedicated servers, providing UCW with valuable insight into user interactions and click-through behaviors in real time.
A New Chapter for UCW
The Vancouver House campus now stands as a testament to UCW’s forward-looking approach, blending innovative design with the energy of downtown Vancouver. The virtual tour not only serves as a powerful recruitment tool but also acts as a living, updatable showcase that can adapt to future expansions or new campus features. International students and agents, in particular, benefit from being able to experience the campus remotely—gaining a clear sense of UCW’s academic setting, student culture, and the city’s bustling backdrop.
By integrating advanced technology with human storytelling, 360Pros helped UCW set a new benchmark for how institutions can engage prospective learners worldwide. As the global higher education landscape continues to evolve, immersive virtual tours like this one prove that distance need not be a barrier to experiencing all that a university has to offer.
